I have been a fan of Joshua Bell's for a decade and have attended each and every performance he's given at the Ordway in St. Paul and the Schubert Club. I played the violin in South Bend Indiana and was first violin in South Bend's Youth Symphony(IU-South Bend) but,in the biggest tradegy of my life, my parents moved me away from my violin teacher/orchestra to a Minnesota suburb where no one was available to teach violin. Eventually I stopped practicing but love classical music. Last Friday, I drove after work(I'm a biologist/environmentalist) from St. Paul to Winona (3 hour drive) and changed into my finest lowcut c**ktail dress. I was thrilled I had 4th row seats and was in a metaphysical trance from Joshua Bell's "devil's trill" and Beethoven's Kreisler concerto. Mr. Bell always plays with passion and physical athleticism but that night he tore into his Gibson like a ravonous wolf. Happily I waited in line after the concert (he played an encore too and it was now 10:30 pm and hot and humid but he was kind enough to stay for autographs)only to bum him out by saying,"Could you please sign my program, they ran out of your CDs?" He looked unhappy and repeated, "They ran out of my CDs?" He was gracious enough to sign my program but I felt horrible that my one opportunity to talk to the great Joshua Bell had been to "bum him out." I drove home in a violent lightening storm along a cliff and the Mississippi River, arriving home at 1am. But it was worth it. And next time I'm bringing a CD of his to the concert in case I'm lucky enough to talk to him again.
