This music is all rather mournful, but then the story is true and it depicts a mournful period in the history of the world. It was not only six million Jews like the Bielskis and their families who were targeted for extermination, but also anyone of any background whom the Nazis thought unfit, including those who were developmentally disabled, mentally ill and just plain chronically sick. Many people of Romany extraction (that is, gypsies) were also killed. Then there were the civilian casualties of the bombing on both sides and the soldiers who gave their lives for the war effort. In all it is estimated that there were 50 million left dead in this war, the vast majority of them Russians, both because the Russians fought on two fronts against the Germans and the Chinese and partly because of Stalin's pogroms against his own people which continued in the years after the war. I congratulate the Bielski brothers for their tremendous courage in saving so many others and the modesty with which they did it. I saw the movie and thought it well done. The music, especially Joshua's plaintive violin, fits the mood and is not just mournful but beautiful and moving as well. I am glad you were involved in this project, Josh.
