I am crazy about this CD. The music from "Porgy and Bess" inspired me to go get the story from the local library to read, since it was not familiar to me. Too bad it's such a sad story, but the music is lovely. "Summertime" has long been familiar to me, since the days of the '60's when it was considered part of the standard folk music repertoire. Then I have a friend who plays jazz piano who used to pay it with great regularity, sometimes with saxophone accompaniment. And I love the old standards Joshua plays here, especially "Embraceable You," "But Not for Me," and "Sweet and Low Down," with the old piano roll of Gershwin himself playing. John Williams must have been thrilled to find in you, Joshua, someone so young who appreciates Gershwin and understands his music and rhythms so well. Good job.
One of the most unique recordings I've ever heard
Unique and extremely well-crafted. I was amazed with "Sweet and Low Down" where Gershwin's original playing was programmed within the recording. The arrangements are quite sophisticated and bring out the soul of the music, the violin, piano and orchestra very well.
fantastic cd
I love this cd because I love jazz. Not only mister Bell proved that he is a talented violin player who dare himself to learn ohter music styls. My compliments mister Bell!!!!
