Alan Alda, Glenn Close, Harrison Ford, and More Set for World Science Festival Gala
By: Dan Bacalzo · May 7, 2009 · New York
Alan Alda, Danny Burstein, Glenn Close, Harrison Ford, James Naughton, and Anna Deavere Smith will be among the performers at the World Science Festival kick-off gala celebration taking place at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, on June 10. Damian Woetzel will direct.
The gala will celebrate the 80th birthday of E.O. Wilson, America's preeminent naturalist and a founding father of the environmental movement. The event will include the New York premiere of "LIFE: A Journey Through Time" -- a concert piece setting the imagery of National Geographic photographer Frans Lanting to an original score by Philip Glass, and performed by the Orchestra of St. Luke's under conductor Marin Alsop. Performers will also include violinist and composer Joshua Bell, The Inspirational Voices of The Abyssinian Baptist Church Choir, and students of the National Dance Institute.
The second annual festival will run June 10-14 at dozens of venues in New York City. Programming will include more than 130 speakers and performers. Confirmed scientists appearing this year include, among many others, Nobel Prize-winners Harold Varmus, Frank Wilczek, James Watson, David Gross and Sir Paul Nurse, as well as renowned neuroscientist Oliver Sacks and environmentalist Bill McKibben.

I just read an interesting article previewing Mr. Bell's new album, "At Home With Friends". It will be released on Sept. 29. Here's the Link: http://www.muruch.com/2009/08/joshua-bell-at-home-with-friends.html
Hi! I'm new on the formum but had to join after hearing this PBS Performance. I have always loved Josh's work and he seems to get better and better each passing year. I need to get to a concert.....perhaps if the Georgia one at Spivey Hall is not sold out. Going to check right now.
While listening to Joshua Bell's recordings is wonderful, there can be nothing better than hearing him in person. On August 12, 2009 in the Avery Fisher Hall of Lincoln Center I had my first opportunity (and I hope it won't be my last) to experience Joshua Bell without the aid of electronic equipment. Incredible! I only wish he had been the entire concert. Haydn's "London" Symphony was well-played by the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra under the baton of Louis Langree, as was Mendelssohn's The Hebrides, Op. 26, but they could not compare to the two Mozart pieces and the Menselssohn concerto played by Mr. Bell. Thank goodness the acoustics in Avery Fisher Hall have been improved (again), so that every exquisite note, no matter how softly played was heard without strain!
I attended the concert with my brother and his wife, who had never heard (or heard of) Joshua Bell until I suggested we get tickets. They were as happy as I was that we had been able to hear that "beautiful music."
When I returned home after the concert, I had a call from my 96-year old aunt (a violinist for most of her life) who had watched the broadcast of the concert on PBS. It was her first chance to to watch as well as listen to Joshua Bell perform. She was thrilled, to put it mildly.
Thank you, Mr. Bell, for giving all of us a glorious evening!
Fabulous. And thanks to PBS for brining it to us.
What a breathtaking performance last night @ Avery Fisher Hall........
The entire audience was captivated by your talent!!! Thank you.
I will be watching PBS tonight to see the performance repeated.

Когда дела-не очень, иду на твой линк. Успокаивает, усиливается надежда. Держись, старина, ты мне нужен.
I am an engineer/science , and an amateur violinist of 2 years.
Both , learning math /science, and learning how to play violin requires much much discipline. And I am certain that Joshua Bell has the talent to go through the hardship of disciplines, and not surprised if he becomes a part time mathematician. ( hopinf he will keep playing violin full time for another 41 years)
And I think people , who choose taking the hardship very beautiful.

To aswoehik58,
Thank you for the information . I was not aware of Mr. Bell's science background. I've only been listening to his music , since Sept. 2008, when he released " Vivaldi Four Seasons". So please accept my apology, if I have offended anyone.
To Vivienne: FYI, Joshua Bell is more than just a pretty face when it comes to science and especially math. He has always had a great interest in computers and for several years was involved in a project at MIT, no less, to create an electric violin, named the Hyperviolin. Hope you will look it up.
It's great, when celebrities like Mr. Bell can bring public attention to the mission of the Science Festival Foundation.
