Podcasts were very helpful
I found both of the Sony Masterworks podcasts (one with Joshua Bell & one with John Corigliano) on The Red Violin Concerto to be most enlightening. Upon my initial listening to the recording and despite the great playing by Mr. Bell & the BSO with the great Marin Alsop, I struggled to enjoy parts of it because they were so "modern". The podcasts really helped me understand and appreciate the concerto and I really am enjoying the entire CD. The Sonata for Violin and Piano is a gem!
