I was a long way from home on this date but was blessed to be able to attend my third in-person Joshua Bell concert. He played a piece I have to believe he truly loves, the Mendelssohn violin concerto, opus 64. He recorded it once when he was quite young and then recorded it again a number of years later after he had written his own cadenzas to be included in the score. His performance in Peoria was just brilliant. His fingers absolutely flew throughout the third movement especially. And he had fun doing it, too--long, flamboyant bow strokes to highlight staccato notes and incredible energy onstage. Joshua is a very special person. Long may he play, and enjoy it!
